Sugar

The crushing season for 2016 completed with the three mills finishing its crush. Penang mill was shut down for the 2016 season therefore the cane from the district was crushed in Rarawai and Lautoka Mills. A total of 1.38 million metric tonnes of cane was crushed and 139503.00 tonnes of raw sugar was produced with a TCTS of 9.9 against an initial estimate of two million metric tonnes of cane.

This year our industry was vulnerable against a Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston who smashed its way through some of the biggest sugarcane producing areas in the Western Division. Thus, the figures have showed a huge reduction in cane production by 25% , decrease in sugar production by 37% and an improvement in TCTS of 20% as compared with the figures from 2015 crushing season.

Our cane farmers were paid FJD$88.49 (or USD44) per tonne of cane after receiving the final payment for 2015 season in last October.
